Empowering schools as change agents for sustainable conservation and more food
security
This project is implemented by CASEE and supported by the IKI Small Grants programme, strengthening
local solutions for effective climate and biodiversity action. IKI Small Grants is part of Germany’s
International Climate Initiative (IKI). It is funded by the German Federal Government and run by
Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.
The project started its implementation on June 1, 2025, and will run until May 31, 2027, in five wards,
namely Kondoa DC, with wards Bereko Soera, Salanka, Kisese, and Masange.

Project goal: By the end of the project, a total of 7700 community members across 10 villages in the five
administrative wards of Bereko, Soera, Salanga, Kisese, and Masange in Kondoa District will have
enhanced their capacities in climate-friendly farming and sustainable conservation practices through the
involvement of empowered schools functioning as change agents.
Project Objectives
Project Output I: Increased Climate Change sensitivity among community members in 10 villages in the
project area.
Project Output ii: Forest cover is increased, and the livelihoods of farmers are improved through the
establishment of community-based woodlots in collaboration with project schools.
Project Output iii: Nutrition status among community members in the 10 villages in the project area is
improved through increased use of perennial plants such as moringa oleifera and Chaya.
Total Target population: 7700.
This includes: 500 Farmers (including crop growers, animal keepers, and beekeepers) of whom 80 (30F;
50M) are youth between 15 and 24 years old, and 420 (180F; 240M) farmers aged 25 years old and
above
Primary school children: 2000 (1100 girls; 900 boys) in 10 primary schools.
Primary school teachers Number: 50 (22F; 28M)
Village leaders and extension workers Number: 150:The number includes 5 (2F; 3M) youths between 15
and 24 years old; and 145 (43F; 102M) are 25 years old and above.
Other farmers within and outside the project area: Number: 5000 (2100F; 2900M).
Project Key Activities
Activity 1: Establish and strengthen environmental clubs in 10 primary schools. School selection is based
on recommendation by the District Education officer following CASEE criteria: availability of enough
land, accessibility of water, and the school’s readiness to care for the project.
Activity 2: Conduct community awareness meetings in 10 villages to educate and engage the community
on climate change and environmental conservation.
Activity 3: Establishment of woodlot farms at the household level by providing 20,00 tree seedlings
(Grevillea Robusta, Neem, and Casuarina) and training to 100 targeted farmers, pupils and teachers
