Girls Education Project (Addressing Barriers To Girl Education)
The project aimed to address the persistent challenges limiting girls’ access to quality secondary education in rural Tanzania. Many communities in remote areas face barriers such as long travel distances to school, inadequate infrastructure, and limited awareness of the importance of girls’ education. In response to these challenges, the initiative was developed to create safe and supportive learning environments for girls, while strengthening community engagement and leadership in promoting education for all.

The project was implemented in the Mbulu and Kilolo Districts in Manyara and Iringa Regions respectively between 2012 to 2015. The project supported access to secondary education among girls in rural areas by supporting the community in the construction of dormitories. A total of 45 dormitories including toilets and bathrooms were constructed in 37 ward-based secondary schools in the two districts. The project also focused in improving the capacity of schools and ward leadership in issues related to the promotion of girls’ education. The project was funded by the Waterloo Foundation, Comic Relief, and DFID from the UK
